Every child experiences and perceives learning differently. For students with learning disabilities, such as dyslexia, the school experiences can be positively or negatively influenced by the attitudes and behaviors of students, staff, and general school policies. That’s why at The Roig Academy, a school that specializes in dyslexia in South Florida, we recognize and celebrate learning differences every day. Here’s how we do it:

Learning Styles

Learning is not a one-size-fits all approach. We believe that exceptional learning occurs when teachers acknowledge the various learning styles. That’s why we engage all prospective students in an individualized interview in order to determine their learning style. Once we understand their learning profile, we develop a comprehensive academic plan that addresses a student’s area of need and embraces their strengths. Our teachers are balanced in their approaches to ensure that all forms of learning are achievable in the classroom.

Learning Strengths

First and foremost, we recognize each student’s learning strengths and incorporate them into day-to-day activities. We implement research and evidence based programs and strategies such as the Orton-Gillingham method that have proven to help students with dyslexia, learn to read.  Our environment is conducive to helping our students develop the ability to solve challenging problems, think, reason, justify, and elaborate on innovative, free-flowing, imaginative ideas.

Our small classrooms encourage students to take risks and offer their ideas and solutions to problems, even if they might be wrong. Our goal is to have students feel safe that their ideas will be respected no matter what.

Individualized Instruction

Every child learns differently — excelling in some areas and struggling in others. At The Roig Academy, each child’s unique social, physical, emotional, cultural, and academic welfare is taken into account. Individualized academic goals, which address areas of interest and academic strengths, are regularly monitored and assessed with input from our multidisciplinary team, which includes the child. This creates a nurturing learning environment that allows for all learners to succeed. Further, our student to faculty ratio is 7 to 1. As a result of our small class sizes, and our specialized teaching methods, our teachers are able to deliver a customized education to each student.

Expectations of Students

We hold high expectations of our students and learning community. Our expectations, for both learning and teaching, encourage our students to rise to the occasion. Our goal is for our students to develop a positive self-esteem and increased confidence with their learning abilities. Through the assistance of our multidisciplinary team, we address key factors to increase academic engagement and learning outcomes. We fully believe that positive learning experiences develop positive academic outcomes.

If we can help students recognize and celebrate their talents, their learning disabilities don’t have to hold them back.

For the past 17 years, The Roig Academy has been providing a hands-on, holistic and individualized educational experience for its students. We implement the latest research-based teaching and learning pedagogy. We are committed to helping our students master the inquiry process, develop strong leadership, critical thinking and problem solving skills. Overall, we celebrate learning differences by recognizing and catering to different learning strengths and styles, taking an individualized approach to teaching, and holding high expectations for our students.
