Understanding How Your Child Learns Best

Understanding how your child learns best can be difficult. Perhaps you’ve seen your child fly through their favorite books at home and are confused by their low  grades at school. Perhaps you know your child struggles to retain information from textbooks, but can recite spelling words backwards and forwards easily. Or, perhaps your child has dyslexia and struggles to get their learning needs met in a traditional classroom setting.

Understanding how your child learns best is essential to your child’s academic success. Learning what works for them early on in their educational journey can set them up for long-term academic success.

However, not all education systems are set up to understand how your child learns best. Sometimes, there’s simply too many children in the classroom for your child to get the individual attention they need to thrive. Or, sometimes the teaching curriculum caters to one style of learning more than others.

The Roig Academy takes a different approach. We cater our approach to each unique student, not all students. We set individualized academic goals for each and every student, addressing their areas of interest, academic strengths and academic needs. Our team will monitor and assess your child’s progress in these areas regularly and make sure to get input from your child.

By involving your child in the conversation, we grow to understand how your child learns best and can apply teaching strategies that work for the unique way they learn.

At the Roig Academy, we use learning style inventories to discover our students dominant learning styles. Learning style inventories are questionnaires that uncover how students prefer to learn. A student’s “learning style” is the way they gather, process, interpret, organize and analyze information. The most common learning styles are visual, auditory and kinesthetic.

Knowing their learning style can help students study smarter and communicate more effectively with their instructors, according to “Knowing Your Learning Style Can Help College Success,” an article on Stanford University’s College Puzzle blog.

Additionally, when parents know their students learning style, they can help their children get excited about learning by finding material that interests them and complements the way they learn, according to an article by the University of Illinois Extension.

Our multi sensory approach to reading highlights our personalized approach to learning. Our reading program uses the principles of the Orton-Gillingham approach, breaking reading and spelling down into smaller skills that use letters and sounds. We build on these smaller skills over time. Our teachers use sight, hearing, touch and movement to show students the connection between language, letters and words.

This approach helps students of all learning styles connect to what they’re learning. Whether they’re audio-visual learners, or learn best by seeing things written out, there’s something for every learning style in our reading program.

If you’re struggling to understand how your child learns best, try these 4 simple steps.

1. Talk To Your Child

Talking to your child about their experiences at school is the first step to understanding how your child learns best. Ask them about their favorite class in school and why it’s they’re favorite. Ask them about their favorite part of class and why. These are great questions to start understanding your child’s academic strengths and areas of need.

2. Talk To Your Child’s Teacher

Your child’s teacher may have interesting insights that can help you understand how your child learns best. Ask them about when your child seems most engaged in class. And, ask them what they see as her academic strengths and needs.
